How long you have worked for Kingspan and what is your role?

I joined Kingspan in 2016 after I graduated in Chemical Engineering, starting out as a lab technician running quality checks and blending formulas. I was fortunate to be here when our Somerton facility was first commissioned and to be able to be part of that journey. I applied to join the Yours to Shape Graduate programme, which gave me the opportunity to travel to Europe. As a result of my time spent in the Pembridge Head Office in the UK, one of the Directors recommended me for my current role as Quality and Continuous Improvement Engineer, and I haven’t looked back since.

 

What do you most enjoy about your role?

The most satisfying thing looking back is seeing how far we have come, reviewing how much improvement has occurred. In the space of just a few years we have totally changed how we run things, and the result has made my job easy! We have driven greater efficiencies, and I enjoy fixing problem so that they don’t come back.

 

Can you tell me about your experience of the Yours to Shape Graduate Development Programme and what you enjoyed/appreciated most about it.

What I appreciated most about this programme was having the opportunity to go in the first place! There was nobody else from this part of the world in my cohort, and it was a great opportunity to network, meet people from lots of different backgrounds. There was real care in the way that it was run and the thought that was put into the programme. We all felt looked after – like being in a family. It was a once in a lifetime experience, and I have made lifelong friends from it. It also gave me a good insight into the wider Group activities – how other divisions operate, as well as different areas of the business such as accounting, innovation, and marketing. It offered a clear, broad view of what is needed to succeed, and what Kingspan excels at.

 

We use the phrase “Planet Passionate” to describe our approach to sustainability and protecting the environment at Kingspan. What does it mean, or how have you seen it, in your role?

The Somerton site is a 6 green star rated building – it has environmental principles built into its very fabric, from daylighting to rainwater harvesting, air flow to thermal efficiency. It embodies what Kingspan does. I am also directly involved in actions that support the Planet Passionate targets, such as optimising gas usage, reducing waste to landfill, and co-ordinating a cost down approach. They are aggressive targets, but you can see the progress that is being made.

 

Tell us about yourself, your interests, activities, achievements etc outside of work.

I’m a bit of a homebody – there’s nothing I like more than challenging my friends to a video game online. I also like boxing, both watching it and taking part – that’s my main physical activity.
